Engineering, Construction Studies, Design and Communications and Technology
Engineering
Engineering for Leaving Cert makes a fantastic base for anyone hoping to
work in this area later on. The main emphasis is on Mechanical Engineering. The subject is largely practical. It can be very labour
intensive so be prepared to give it a lot of your time. Students learn a
lot about Health and Safety as well as taking a close look at metals, plastics
and manufacturing processes. The assessment is made up of a practical
exam, a project and a final exam.
Construction Studies
Even with the drop off of careers in construction, this subjects is still
very popular with just under 10,000 students being examined in the
subject in 2010. Construction theory as well as drawing are examined in
the final exam. Students will get an opportunity to find out about
tools, heat and thermal effects, illumination, sound and structure.
Design and Communication
This subject which was formally know as
Technical Graphics is a relatively new course. Students have the
advantage of doing course work that is worth up to 40% of their final
exams. If you are interested in graphic communication, computer graphics
and design then this subject will certainly be of interest to you. Having this
subject would be advantageous if you wished to work in the area of Computer
Science, Architecture or Engineering.
Technology
As
you can imagine the world of technology is huge. At leaving Cert level
students will focus on quality management, design, materials and
structures as well as manufacturing skills. If this is an area that you
want to work in, then this subject will give you a good basis.

Where to now!
Welcome to my blog! This site is set up to help students who are going into 5th year pick the subjects that best suit them. It should give you a little bit of information about what subjects are out there and the consequences of choosing each subject.I have tried to make sure that it is up to date but sometimes colleges will change the entry requirements. I have made sure to have a link to every course I have mentioned. Click on those that are of interest and it should tell you the subjects and levels required. I hope you find it helpful. If you have any information on the topic please post it.
Thanks
